Son Mieux @ Privatclub, Berlin – 11 February 2024

Finally, another gig for me to go go – it had been way too long! This time, it was the Dutch band Son Mieux playing in Privatclub. I bought the ticket more out of needing a gig to go to, ANY gig would do. Of course, I’d heard their songs on the radio quite a lot and although I liked them, they never made me go “Ooooh I need to see them live!” But the gig greatly exceeded all my expectations.

The support act – should I even mention them? A German band called Matija; according to their own website, “a band you can’t put in a box”. At least that we can agree on. Unfortunately, originality does not automatically equal good music and they were not my cup of tea at all. But at least half the crowd seemed to enjoy them.

After the support act, I decided to find a better spot in the room for Son Mieux. As much as I love smaller venues, they layout of Privatclub is not ideal with a huge square pillar in the middle of the crowd. I ended up right at the back of the room, which was still not too far from the stage. My view was pretty good mostly, although inevitably there were some tall people in front of me I had to look around the entire gig.

Shortly after 9 PM, the band finally entered the stage and started the gig with great enthusiasm and immediately got the entire crowd going. They played all their most well-known songs like 1992, Drive, Tell Me More, Can’t Get Enough and of course Multicolour. The entire crowd up until the very last row was dancing, singing along and having a great time. Before I knew it, they were already on their last song. But they hadn’t played their latest single Tonight yet, so obviously there had to be an encore. Sadly after that one song, it was really over and the band said their goodbye. The biggest thing of the night for me was how much even the band themselves enjoyed being on stage and how grateful they were to the crowd for showing up. Just a few months ago they played a sold out AFAS live in Amsterdam two nights in a row – a crowd about 30 times bigger than Privatclub. And they were still so appreciative of the crowd of no more than 200 people in this little club in Berlin.

To be honest, before the gig started, I was kind of wishing I was back home on my couch. After that support act and being on my own at the gig, the wait before the main act felt endless, my back was already starting to hurt and I was questioning why on earth I’d even left my house as all on a Sunday night. But as soon as the band started, all that was forgotten and I had a great time! ❤️
